Ex-soldier Cleared Of Queensland Double Murder

A former Australian soldier is a free man after being acquitted of the murders of his ex-wife and her new partner almost three years ago on the Gold Coast.

Christopher Robert Carter walked free from the Brisbane Supreme Court late Thursday after being cleared of murdering Renee Carter and convicted pedophile Corey Croft at their Upper Coomera house in January 2015.

Carter's supporters in the public gallery burst into tears of relief as the jury announced their not guilty verdicts, on the basis of self-defence.

He was also acquitted of the alternative charge of manslaughter.

The trial heard Mr Croft had been convicted in South Australia for a child sex offence and when Carter first learned about it he was "shocked" and later "devastated".

He had previously been told Mr Croft had also been recently accused of sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl.

Carter told police he went to his former wife's Gold Coast home to talk to her when she "came at me with a knife", the court heard.

"She was f***ing telling me that she was going to kill me," Carter told the police.

Carter recounted taking hold of the knife and stabbing the woman. When Croft appeared, he turned the blade on him as well.
