Trump Targets Post Office Prices, Amazon in Tweet

President Donald Trump targeted Amazon this morning calling for the nation's postal service to raise prices of shipments to help with costs.

“Why is the United States Post Office, which is losing many billions of dollars a year, while charging Amazon and others so little to deliver their packages, making Amazon richer and the Post Office dumber and poorer? Should be charging MUCH MORE!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The U.S. Postal Service is an independent agency within the federal government and does not receive tax dollars to operate. Instead, they make their money from the more than $1.4 trillion deliver industry that also includes companies like UPS and FedEx.

A recent report of the U.S. Postal Services finances was grim - the agency lost $2.74 billion in 2017 with its deficit increasing to a record $61.86 billion. That' better than it has been in the past, but only because of a "$2.2 billion reduction in workers' compensation liability."
