Watch Ed Sheeran Nail His Cover Of Eric Clapton's 'Layla'

January 2, 2018

Ed Sheeran loves a complicated love song, so it's no big surprise that the pop chart-topper decided to put his spin on Eric Clapton's beloved "Layla" during his recent appearance on the UK's Jools Holland's Annual Hootenanny.

Feat. and more

For those Cheerios who don't know the background behind "Layla," it's a juicy one. Even though the song was initially inspired by a 7th century love story from Arabia, the crux being The Story of Layla and Majnun by poet Nizami Ganjavi, there's more to this backstory. Clapton wrote the 1971 hit about his love for his friend's wife, Pattie Boyd. His friend and Boyd's husband just so happened to be George Harrison of The Beatles and in an OMG-worthy ending, Clapton ended up marrying Pattie. We told you it was juicy.
