One woman had a terrifying wake-up call, when she heard what seemed to be a pre-dawn home intruder banging on her door — but the situation wasn’t what it appeared to be at all.
Danielle Howe of Martinsville, Indiana was inside her home with her husband, Curtis, and their two young kids on December 28, 2017. It was 5:00 a.m. and the family was fast asleep when she heard the sounds of someone attempting to kick in her door.
“I woke up to somebody banging on our door, just saying, ‘Open, open the door!” Danielle recalled. The mom of two was apprehensive about opening the door to a total stranger so early in the morning, until she heard what he had to say next.
“I was just yelling ‘Why?’ and he finally said, ‘There’s a fire!'” she explained.
The Howe family’s detached garage had caught fire, and the flames were close to reaching their home just a few feet away when the stranger spotted the blaze and intervened.
According to WTHR, the rescuers were construction worker Nicholas David and two nurses named Michelle Blundell and Heather Harp. Nicholas had been driving to work early in the morning when he spotted the fire. Michelle and Heather, who were working the overnight shift at a nearby nursing home, also saw the fire. All three snapped into action, trying to force their way inside the Howe home to wake the couple and their kids up in order to save them.
“We’ve seen them around, seen the kids outside,” Michelle said. “I knew they had babies. We were getting in the house one way or the other.”
Thankfully, the Howe family and their dog managed to get out safely, and firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before they ever reached the house.
Thank goodness for this trio of Good Samaritans!
