Black Dresses Dominate the Golden Globes Red Carpet
January 8, 2018
Black gowns and tuxedos dominated the red carpet at this year’s Golden Globes as Hollywood came together in solidarity to protest against sexual abuse and harassment, especially in the workplace.
A-listers including Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Margot Robbie, Emma Watson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Shailene Woodley, and more all walked the red carpet in black dresses while men opted for black tuxedos (some with matching black shirts underneath as opposed to the traditional white) with a Time’s Up campaign pin.
And it wasn’t just actors, actresses and nominees on the red carpet. Many activists were also wearing black on the carpet in support of Time’s Up and to take a stand against sexual harassment. #MeToo founder Tarana Burke walked the Globes red carpet and posted on social media, along with a mission statement from her and other activists attending the awards show in support of the Time’s Up campaign, that “The 8 of us attending the Golden Globes tonight are doing so as representatives of the folks who we work on behalf.”
Many other stars also took to social media to support Time’s Up, sharing statements like “Why I Wear Black: Because we are grateful to the many survivors and allies who have spoken out and forced the conversation about sexual harassment, sexual assault, and gender bias into the spotlight.”
Another statement reads, “We seek equal representation, opportunities, benefits and pay for all women workers, not to mention greater representation of women of color, immigrant women, and lesbian, bisexual, and transgender women, whose experiences in the workforce are often significantly worse than their white, cisgender, straight peers.”
