A routine traffic stop on a Mississippi highway turned into a major drug bust for Rankin County police when they found 51 pounds of heroin hidden near the gas tank of an SUV on Monday night. According to Fox News, police pulled over Arlene Viridiana Moya and Trisha Lynne Ibarra for a traffic violation and noticed that "there appeared to be tampering with the undercarriage of the vehicle." Upon further inspection, police found about $10 million worth of heroin hidden by the gas tank.
Police arrested the women and took Ibarra's three-month-old infant, who was sitting in the backseat, into protective custody. The two woman face charges of aggravated trafficking of heroin.
Sheriff Bryan Bailey told WAPT that he couldn't believe a mother would put her baby at risk by transporting such a large amount of illegal drugs. He blamed the "ruthless" drug cartels, who "go to whatever means necessary" to avoid getting caught:
"Regular mom or dad, who would even consider transporting drugs with a child with them in the car? But, I'm telling you, these drug cartels are ruthless; they go to whatever means necessary," Bailey said. "They use whatever they can to get around us and around getting caught."
The two women are being held without bond and face life in prison if they are convicted.
