Mirai Nagasu Is The 1st American Woman To Land Triple Axel At The Olympics

Mirai Nagasu and Adam Rippon put together flawless back-to-back performances to help the United States earn the bronze medal in the team competition. Nagasu made history, becoming the first American woman to land a triple axel in Olympic competition.

According to ESPN, Nagasu was just the third woman ever to land the trick during the Olympics. When she nailed the trick, just 21-seconds into her routine, the crowd erupted in cheers, giving her a standing ovation. The judges approved and gave her a score of 137.53. 

She said she could feel the excitement of the crowd and had to keep it together despite wanting to "stop the music and get off the ice."

I don't know if you could tell -- it was more something I could feel -- but to nail it the way I did, even out of the corner of my eye, I could see my teammates standing out of excitement," Nagasu said. "And at that moment I wanted to stop the music and get off, but I still had my whole program ahead of me, and to complete the performance to the best of my ability is really exciting."

Canada won the gold medal, while Olympic Athletes from Russia took home the silver.
