Frances McDormand Enlists All Female Nominees During Powerful Oscars Speech

Frances McDormand delivered a powerful and emotional speech while accepting the Best Actress award at the 90th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday, March 4. The Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri actress was heard around the globe when she asked each female nominee in the audience to stand. 

“So I’m hyperventilating a little bit so if I fall over pick me up cause I got some things to say,” McDormand said at the beginning of her speech, visibly shaking. “I think this is what Chloe Kim must have felt like after she did back to back 1080s.”

After thanking her family and placing her Oscar statue on the floor for perspective, she invited all female nominees in the audience to stand and join her in the win.

"If I may be so honored to have all the female nominees in every category stand with me in this room tonight," she said. "Meryl [Streep] if you do it, everybody else will, come on."

Meryl then proudly willing stood while raising her arms in the air.

"The filmmakers, the producers, the directors, the writers, the cinemotographers, the composers, the songwriters, the designers, come on," McDormand continued. "Look around, look around...because we all have stories to tell and projects we need financed."

She ended her speech by stating "I have two words for you: Inclusion rider."

According to Variety, an inclusion rider is “a clause in an actor’s contract that requires the cast and crew be diverse in order to retain the actor.”

Host Jimmy Kimmel then joked that Frances now also deserves an Emmy for her speech. “I hope she wins an Emmy for that speech because that was unbelievable,” Kimmel said.

Frances was up against Meryl Streep for The Post, Saoirse Ronan for Lady Bird, Margot Robbie for I, Tonya and Sally Hawkins for Shape of Water.
