Evacuations and Traffic Mess Result from Mission Valley Gas Leak

Evacuation orders were finally lifted Wednesday evening after crews were able to cap a gas leak in the area of Ulric and Friars Rd. late Wednesday morning. 

Police used the reverse 911 system to alert area residents of the evacuation as crews work to repair the line earlier in the day   

More than 1000 homes were affected. Also, a number of businesses closest to the leak were evacuated or asked to shelter in place, including The Doubletree Hotel, P.F. Changs, The Container Store. 

The gas leak created a huge traffic nightmare with a number of closures. Northbound and Southbound 163 between I-8 and Genesee and eastbound and westbound Friars between Frazee and Fashion Valley. The roads were re-opened in the evening  

People near the scene reported seeing and smelling the gas from the ruptured gas line.

A temporary evacuation was set up for people at 5905 Friars Road.
