Iconic French Designer Givenchy Dies Aged 91

Heaven just became a little bit more stylish as sadly the founder of Givenchy fashion house, Hubert de Givenchy has passed away aged 91.

The aristocrat French fashion designer died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday and his death was confirmed by his longtime partner Phillipe Venet on Monday.

“It is with huge sadness that we inform you that Hubert Taffin de Givenchy has died,” said a Givenchy fashion house statement.

The House of Givenchy is sad to report the passing of its founder Hubert de Givenchy, a major personality of the world of French Haute Couture and a gentleman who symbolized Parisian chic and elegance for more than half a century. He will be greatly missed. pic.twitter.com/xapm0zSwDy

Givenchy was a true style icon, creating a template for ladylike chic during the 1950s and 1960s. Throughout his career Givenchy styled a number of high-brow celebrities including Jackie Kennedy, Princess Grace of Monaco, Jane Fonda and most significantly Audrey Hepburn.

Hepburn acted as a muse of sorts for Givenchy throughout their 40-year friendship and it was the black sheath dress that he designed for the opening scene of ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ that truly made him a fashion icon.

In the statement released by his fashion label on Monday, Givenchy was described as a true gentleman.

“Hubert de Givenchy was a symbol of Parisian elegance for more than half a century…who revolutionised fashion,” said the statement.

The couture designer retired in 1995 but continued to influence the fashion scene decades on.
