Two volunteer firefighters were killed when their fire truck overturned as they were responding to a fatal accident in West Virginia. Three other firefighters were taken to the hospital after the truck flipped over and hit a rock wall. Authorities have not released the names of the deceased firefighters and only said the injuries of the other three firefighters were "serious."
Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper promised that the "doctors and nurses here are doing all that they can for the firefighters."
“The hospital is overwhelmed, the police are overwhelmed, we’re all overwhelmed,” said Carper, who was at the hospital with the firefighters. “The doctors and nurses here are doing all that they can for the firefighters. Now all we can do is hope for the best.”
The five members of Pratt Volunteer Fire Department were called to the crash on Interstate 77 involving a head-on collision between two cars. A male and female in a car driving the wrong way down the highway were killed, and a female was killed in the car they struck.
Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper said the tragedy was "the worse accident involving our volunteer fire service has ever suffered."
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those involved in these accidents this evening and their families. This is a tragic event and believed to be the worse accident involving our volunteer fire service has ever suffered."
The West Virginia State Police are investing both accidents.
