Artists like Demi Lovato, Logic, Jennifer Lopez, and more have publicly admitted to leading a sober lifestyle – and it’s not an easy feat, considering the perpetual temptations that exist when you have unlimited access to nearly everything as a celebrity. While some celebs made the decision early on not to drink, others came to that conclusion later in life – sometimes after battling with addiction. Whatever the reason for their ultimate decision not to imbibe, the choice is a personal one. Read on to find out why the following 15 stars decided to stop drinking once and for all.
1. Demi Lovato
After suffering from drug and alcohol addiction at a young age (which led to a stay in rehab), Demi Lovato has been vocal about her struggles and her decision to no longer imbibe.
2. Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick admitted in a GQ profile that he doesn’t drink or smoke. He even referenced his sober lifestyle on the track “The Art of Peer Pressure,” rapping: “Normally I’m drug free / But tonight I’m with the homies.”
3. Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez told InStyle why she doesn’t drink alcohol, saying, “I think that ruins your skin. Of course, during celebratory toasts, everybody’s like, ‘You can’t toast with water!’ So I’ll toast with alcohol and just take a sip,”
4. Lucy Hale
Lucy Hale told Us Weekly she actively chose not to be part of the party scene in Hollywood, saying, “I’m just always trying to surround myself with better people and be the best version of myself possible. I know it sounds obnoxious to hear people say that, but why not?”
5. Lana Del Rey
Lana told Vogue back in 2012 that she doesn’t drink anymore: "I haven't had a drink for seven years. Homeless outreach, drug and alcohol rehabilitation—that’s been my life for the past five years."
6. Calvin Harris
Calvin told the BBC back in 2009: "I stopped drinking because it actually was making me ill. It was affecting my brain in the worst way."
7. Macklemore
"The thing that pulled me back was knowing that I wanted to be a musician, and that if I wanted to do this I had to get sober,” Macklemore told MTV.
8. Common
A Vibe profile revealed that Common no longer drinks, smokes weed or eats meat.
9. Leona Lewis
Leona told Glamour back in 2012: “I don’t drink—I hate the taste of alcohol. When my debut single [Bleeding Love] went to No.1, I celebrated with non-alcoholic champagne.”
10. Mike Posner
Mike Posner wrote a lengthy post about his decision to quit drinking, saying, in part, "I decided I couldn’t let alcohol rob me of enjoying my life’s special moments."
11. Logic
Logic told VLAD TV: “Drinking was something I was never really into, which is weird."
12. Eminem
Eminem is now reportedly drug-free after a near-fatal overdose. He told The Fix: “Had I got to the hospital about two hours later, I would have died. My organs were shutting down. My liver, kidneys, everything. They didn't think I was gonna make it. My bottom was gonna be death.”
13. Keith Urban
A Rolling Stone profile noted Keith Urban got sober more than 12 years ago.
14. Tim McGraw
Tim McGraw revealed in 2016 why he quit drinking in 2008, saying via Taste of Country: “I was at a crossroads in my life on all fronts: I wanted to be healthy, I wanted to be around for my kids, I wanted to be a better husband and a better father, I wanted to take care of myself mentally and physically, and I wanted to get the most out of my career that I could get out of my career."
15. Jennifer Hudson
Back in 2013, Jennifer Hudson admitted in an interview with Chelsea Handler, “I’ve never had a drink in my life. I’m sober.”
