Steven Tyler, Joe Perry Get Tony Nomination for 'SpongeBob' Musical

It's certainly not the type of collaboration you would expect from a pair of rockers formerly known as the Toxic Twins, but it's true: Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry have been nominated for a Tony Award due to a song they wrote for SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical.

The Broadway adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon, SpongeBob SquarePants, was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, including Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre.

The song Tyler and Perry contributed to the score was one called "Bikini Bottom Boogie." While the typical Aerosmith fan might not recognize the subject of the song, the guitar work and vocal melodies are unmistakably Aerosmith.

Tyler and Perry weren't the only famous artists to contribute to SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical score. The music for the show also includes songs by David Bowie and Brian Eno, Panic! at the Disco, The Flaming Lips, Plain White T's, They Might Be Giants and even John Legend, among others.

That podium could be crowded if SpongeBob wins!

The Tony Awards will be broadcast live Sunday, June 10, at 8/7c on CBS.

While Aerosmith is taking it easy in 2018 while the band members focus on other projects, Perry said recently that Aerosmith is planning to celebrate a huge milestone next year.

"In 2019, we will be closing in on our 50th anniversary, so we are planning some dates and a tour to celebrate that," he told Atlantic City Weekly last month. "Right now we are pretty much laying low and finishing up some solo things before we start that."

Tyler spent much of last year touring on his We're All Somebody From Somewhere solo album.

In January, Perry released his latest solo album, Sweetzerland Manifesto. In April, he played a handful of solo concerts along with a band including Extreme frontman Gary Cherone and Perry's fellow Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford

This summer Perry will be touring Europe with Hollywood Vampires. The supergroup featuring Perry alongside Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp also plans to finish recording its sophomore album this summer.

Perry has also reiterated in multiple recent interviews that he and his frontman have discussed getting into the studio to work on a new Aerosmith album. Finding the time in their schedules to do that, however, has been challenging.

"We've been so involved with other things," Perry told Best Classic Bands. "I know Steven's been doing his solo thing. We haven't gotten down to thing specifically, but I really would like to [record] some new music. It's kind of in that chill time for Aerosmith."

The band reportedly did some recording last year in London.
