A close friend of Chelsea Manning says that the transgender activist is safe following several posts on Twitter that sparked concern for Manning's well-being after one photo appeared to show the 30-year-old woman standing on the edge of an upper-story window ledge late Sunday night.

The first posted Sunday night read as follows:

“I’m sorry – I tried – I’m sorry I let you all down. Im not really cut out for this world – I tried adapting to this world out here but I failed you – I couldn’t do this anymore – I can take people I don’t know hating me but not my own friends. I tried and I’m sorry about my failure.”

A second post, included a photo that appeared to show Manning looking down from the edge of a tall building with the words "im sorry" written. It was not clear where the photo was taken.

Shortly after the alarming tweets were posted, they were deleted from Manning's timeline about ten minutes later. A third message was then posted to Manning's account that assured people that the activist was OK, and asked people to "please give her some space."

Manning was convicted of leaking more than 700,000 military and State Department secrets to Wikileaks back in 2010. Known as Bradley Manning at the time of her arrest, she came out as transgender during her 2013 court-martial and was barred from growing her hair out while in prison.

Her 35-year sentence was commuted by President Barack Obama at the end of his term. Manning has been free for a little over a year.

Manning is also a long-shot Democratic candidate for Senate in her adopted state of Maryland. When asked whether Manning had suspended her campaign, Kelly Wright, the communications director for Manning's bid for Senate, told the AP: "Negative."
