Homeland Security Secretary Warns "Be Prepared for 2018 Hurricane Season"

Ahead of the 2018 Hurricane season, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen says Americans should put together an emergency plan and take this year's season very seriously. 

"I really urge every American to make an emergency plan that fits your family and your community," said Nielsen. "What are the particular risks you might face?"

The Homeland Security Secretary was touring the National Hurricane Center in Miami today as the agency prepares for what promises to be an above average season of storms. 

"Of course for many of us who were tracking storm Alberto, it seems like it got a little bit of a jumpstart on us. NOAA, as you know, has predicted that this season will be near, or above normal," said Nielsen. 

Individuals should plan ahead in case of emergencies, and make sure they have adequate water, food, and evacuation plans in place for their family. Nielsen said it was also important to think of your pets when planning for major emergencies. 

"If you have pets, think about their needs as well. Determine how you would evacuate and find out how you're going to communicate with your family during disasters, we know that some communications methods don't work." 

Nielsen said it was also important for homeowners and individuals to purchase the proper type of insurance policies to make sure they will be able to recover and rebuild following a major disaster. 

"We urge you to talk to your folks ahead of time. Talk to your insured carriers, talk to your agents. Make sure you understand your coverages, what's exempted, what might need to change to make sure that you have the same expectations and know how the insurance can help you," said Nielsen.

The 2018 hurricane season officially begins on Friday.
