A Dunkin' Donuts shop in Baltimore has removed a sign that offered customers a coupon if they reported any workers who were shouting in a foreign language to management.
The Baltimore Sun reports that the sign in the doughnut shop on West 41st in Baltimore was removed after it created a major stir on social media. The owner of the franchise thought the sign was inappropriate and removed it.
"If you hear any of our staff SHOUTING in a language other than ENGLISH Please call ... immediately with the name of the employee to receive a coupon for FREE Coffee and a pastry."
Dunkin' Donuts released a statement about the sign, saying the store's general manager of the shop posted the sign "based on her personal judgement" to address a "customer service and satisfaction issue."
“Dunkin’ Donuts and our franchisees share the goal of creating a welcoming and hospitable environment for all guests,” the statement read.
Rules outlined by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) states that rules permitting employees to only speak English in the workplace violates the law "unless the employer can show that they are justified by business necessity."
