The man who made headlines after his body odor forced the plane he was on to make an emergency landing has passed away. The passenger, who has been identified as Russian rock musician Andrey Suchilin, died as a result of tissue necrosis from an infection he suffered while on vacation.

It was the infection, not poor hygiene, which caused his "unbearable" smell. According to Newsweek, the infection caused his skin to rot, and that smell made other passengers sick, forcing the plane to land in Portugal last month.

Suchilin's wife explained in a Facebook post that he sought treatment for the infection before boarding the flight but was told that it was just an "ordinary beach infection." He was given antibiotics and was cleared to fly.

Suchilin underwent multiple surgeries to treat the tissue necrosis, but his health continued to deteriorate. He eventually fell into a coma and passed away due to organ failure.
