A semi-truck driver got lost while driving down the highway in North Carolina and ended up on a beach, stuck in the sand. The driver explained that he realized he was driving north on Route 12 when he needed to be heading south. He started following his GPS trying to find a place to turn around. As he looked for a way to get to the other side of the highway, he ended up driving off the road and onto the beach.
He thought he could do a U-Turn but his tires could not gain any traction in the sand, leaving him stranded. Police had to call a 60-ton tow truck to pull the big rig back onto the road.
Authorities said that something like this happens a few times every year when people don't realize the pavement is about to end as they follow their GPS. Vehicles are allowed on the stretch of beach, but most people only venture out if they have four-wheel drive. Motorists are also supposed to let air out of their tires until the air pressure is reduced to around 20 pounds per square inch, which is about half of the normal pressure for tires.
