Star Wars: Episode IX Taps Keri Russell for Mysterious Role

Keri Russel has been tapped for a mysterious role in Star Wars: Episode IX, according to a new report from Variety. The Americans actress is indeed headed to a galaxy far, far away, however, only a few details about what, exactly, this new role entails have been released. J.J. Abrams is helming the final installment of the latest Star Wars trilogy, so, it makes sense that the director called on Russell to join the cast. Abrams and Russell have worked together in the past - Abrams produced Russell's breakout television show Felicity and they most recently collaborated on 2006's Mission: Impossible III

Variety reports that the role calls for "action-heavy fight scenes," which makes Russell a perfect fit. Her stint on the critically acclaimed The Americans, as well as her role in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, will definitely prepare her for some intense showdowns in deep space.

Russel was apparently one of several actresses up for consideration for the role, however, she was ultimately chosen for the part. Abrams and Lucasfilm searched for the perfect fit over the past few months, letting Russell know she'd been cast shortly before the Fourth of July.  There is speculation that Abrams will cast two more actors by the time the film begins production at the end of the month. It will be interesting to see who these new additions are and how they'll help shape the final installment of the trilogy.

Star Wars: Episode IX is expected to hit theaters on December 20, 2019.
