A school district in Ohio has a new safety measure to help keep students and faculty safe in the event of a school shooter. Columbiana Exempted Village School District is installing "tactical grade" pepper spray in glass cases throughout the schools.

If the glass boxes are broken, an alarm will sound and police and school officials will be immediately notified. The system, created by Threat Extinguisher, can also be set up to send text messages and e-mails to thousands of people, letting them know where the potential threat is. This can help responding officers locate the suspect quickly and keep students and teachers from inadvertently placing themselves in danger while trying to evacuate.

The district paid $25,000 to install the system, and will also pay a yearly maintenance fee to keep it up and running.

School officials warned that any student who removes a cannister when there is not an emergency will be punished, just like they would be if they pulled a fire alarm.
