Multiple people had to be rescued from Lake Michigan over the weekend after they were pulled underwater by waves that were between three and five feet tall. The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety listed the large volume of emergency calls they responded to in a Facebook post describing the rescue operations.

Over 20 rescue workers from multiple agencies were assigned to patrol the beach due to the dangerous conditions on the lake.

Officers, along with the help of beachgoers, formed human chains to pull people from the water. Unfortunately, two people died, but rescuers managed to save three others who were taken to the hospital for treatment. One of those individuals is in serious condition, while the other two were listed in stable condition.

According to WOOD-TV, officials had put up red flags indicating it was unsafe to swim, but that didn't stop people from jumping into the water. After the second drowning, park rangers drove up and down the beach using a loudspeaker to tell people to "please stay out of the water."
