The parents of a young boy are suing the company that makes Dum Dum lollipops after their son had to be hospitalized when a part of the lollipop broke off the stick and became lodged in his throat.

The suit claims that on July 5th, 2017 the lollipop “slipped and/or came off the stick and lodged in (the child’s) throat, causing (the child’s) airway to close for an extended period of time."

Mark and Kristina Matthews filed a lawsuit against Spangler Candy Company claiming that "the defective Dum Dum sucker was unreasonably dangerous and incapable of being safely used by its intended user."

Following the "heroic effort by Mark E. Matthews" to remove the piece of candy from his son's throat, the boy was rushed to the hospital where he was treated for a throat injury.

The lawsuit is demanding $30,000 to cover medical expenses and compensate the family for the "pain and suffering, emotional trauma, anxiety and distress, loss of life's pleasures and inconvenience" as a result of the incident.
