If you are planning to take a vacation to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina you will have to watch your language. Under the city's disorderly conduct ordinances somebody who is caught cursing in public could face a fine of up to $500, and/or 30 days behind bars.
Myrtle Beach Spokesperson Mark Kruea told WPDE the hefty fine is not about raising money for the city, but to help keep the peace.
“It’s not the ticket,” Kruea said. “It’s compliance. The goal is to have folks obey whatever rules, ordinance that any government puts in place.”
According to the Sun News, police officers wrote 289 tickets to people for violating the foul language ordinance, bringing in $22,161 to the city in 2017.
A simple slip of profanity likely won't get you a ticket, but if you continue to curse and threaten people, you could end up spending a few days behind bars.
"If you utter what is essentially fighting words, words designed to provoke a violent reaction from someone else, that's where you'll run afoul with this ordinance," explained Kruea.
