A woman who works as a nurse for the Department of Veterans Affairs was arrested after she admitted to police that she poisoned her husband. Lana Sue Clayton told authorities that she spiked her husband's water with eyedrops after the "toxicology tests discovered poisonous levels of Tetrahydrozoline" in the system of Steven Clayton. Tetrahydrozoline is a chemical that can be used to reduce redness in the eyes and is found in many over-the-counter eye drops.
Clayton was found dead in his upscale home in Clover, South Carolina after falling down the stairs. Authorities believed his death was an accident until they received the toxicology report.
Lana Clayton was charged with murder and the unlawful malicious tampering of food. Police did not release a motive for the killing. Court records showed that Lana was appointed to be the personal representative of her husband's estate following his death. It is unclear how the murder charges will impact the disbursal of the estate.
