Pete Wentz Explores His Identity In New Episode Of 'Spit'
By Peyton Blakemore
September 4, 2018
Pete Wentz never really felt or looked like the others in his small town in Illinois. However, it was his lack of fitting in that allowed him to create his own identity.
While the Fall Out Boy frontman has gone on to have great success creating his own lane, he has always been curious about his genetic makeup. So much so, he took a 23andMe genetic test (which is an at-home DNA test) and discussed his results on the latest episode of Spit.
Podcast host Baratunde Thurston and medical geneticist and independent academic Dr. Robert Green sat down with Pete to discuss how his DNA may have shaped his future. In the interview, which is broken up into two parts, Pete first discussed his curiosity in finding out what he's made of and how his genetic makeup possibly shaped who he is today. In the second part of the interview, the "Champion" singer revealed his 23andMe results in real-time.
Pete, who described himself as a bit of a genetic "mutt," began the interview by discussing how he was anxious to find out a bit more about himself through taking the test, especially since he always felt like he was a bit different from those around him.
"[Growing up] I didn't feel like I looked like anybody," Pete explained. "I just looked like my brother and sister, kind of. That didn't inform a ton of my personality I don't think, maybe it did, I don't know. I think it would be more interesting to know. Since we have more of the technology to be able to do it, why would [I] not find out?"
He added, "I've always been kind of like on the Island of Misfit Toys, you know? And then if I find out that I actually have, like, a toy home ... You know? That'd be weird, I guess."
Well, he did find out. In the second part of the interview, Pete revealed his DNA results and explained how he connected to them.
"There was a lot of like "4% this, 4% Ghana," he said. "It's interesting, and I got a feeling that we're all pretty much a big mix. I mean, not we're all, but a lot of us are probably kind of a mix because we live in a very global place, and there was something peaceful about that."
He continued, "I don't know how I'm going to find somebody who has the exact mix, a similar mix as me, even like my siblings or something, but maybe you don't need somebody who looks like you and feels like you. Maybe you find people who just increase your happiness or make the world feel like it's a little bit smaller for you, and that's good enough. I don't know. It's kind of cheesy, but I actually kind of felt that."
