Sterling K. Brown has taken to social media to offer support for his The Predator co-star Olivia Munn amid controversy surrounding the film's casting of a sexual predator who "attempted to lure a 14-year-old female into a sexual relationship via the internet."
The LA Times reported that the film's director, Shane Black, cast his friend Steven Wilder Striegel without disclosing his past conviction to 20th Century Fox or on-screen partner Olivia Munn. After Munn discovered his history, she reached out to the movie studio and requested their scene be deleted from the final cut of the film.
While promoting the movie at the Toronto Film Festival this week, she says none of her co-stars agreed to do group interviews and she expressed feelings of isolation. In response, Sterling K. Brown tweeted a series of messages explaining his take on the situation and supporting Munn.
He starts by apologizing to Olivia, stating that due to not being in attendance at the festival he wasn't able to support her in person.
I’m sorry you’re feeling so isolated, my dear. And I’m sorry you’ve been the only one to speak up publicly. I was not at #TIFF so I didn’t have an opportunity to be there with you. There are two main issues as far as I see it. First, what is and is not forgivable?...That’s gonna vary from individual to individual. You and @BonafideBlack may differ when it comes to that issue. I don’t have all the details regarding his friend’s crime, but I know it involves a minor, and he spent time in jail.
Brown continues by backing up her claims that they were not given the opportunity to turn down working with a sexual predator, thanking 20th Century Fox for removing the scene, and assuring Olivia that she did the right thing by speaking out.
With regards to forgiveness, I leave that to...the individual. What I take issue with, (& I believe Shane addressed this in his apology), is that we all have the right to know who we’re working with! And when someone has been convicted of a crime of a sexual nature involving a child, we have the right to say that’s not okay!...Our studio was not given that opportunity, and neither was our cast. Especially @oliviamunn who was the only member of the principal cast who had to work with him. I so appreciate that you “didn’t leave well enough alone,” & again, I’m sorry you feel isolated in taking action. Thank you to @20thcenturyfox for taking quick action in deleting the scene. @oliviamunn I hope you don’t feel quite so alone. You did the right thing.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Olivia opened up about feeling ostracized by people involved.
"I do feel like I've been treated by some people as if I'm the one who went to jail. Or I'm the one who put this guy onto our set. It was really important for me to have the scene deleted."
