If you think ax-throwing while drinking liquor at a bar without any supervision is a bad idea, you'll be pleased to know that the Michigan Liquor Control Commission agrees with you.

According to MLive, Hub Stadium, a bar in Auburn Hills, Michigan, had its liquor license suspended for one day after after bringing in a new game for those drinkers who like throwing axes while indulging in their drink of choice.

But, unfortunately for Hub Stadium customers, the Michigan Liquor Control Commission had several problems with how the warehouse-style bar had their ax-throwing game set up. Among some of the violations they listed in their complaint: drinking alcohol while throwing axes, ax-throwers wearing open-toed shoes, a lack of monitoring by bad management and axes ricocheting off targets in the direction of participants.

"A licensed establishment that allows alcohol-consuming patrons to throw potentially injurious and even deadly weapons posed significant concern ... " a statement issued Tuesday, Sept. 25, by the state office of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) read. "While the (Michigan Liquor Control Commission) does not regulate ax throwing or any other sport - and it is not contrary to the law for sporting activities to take place in liquor licensed establishments - once the results of the investigation showed that a significant threat to the public health existed at this establishment, the (Michigan Liquor Control Commission) ordered the hearing."

The state liquor board cited several videos videos posted to the bar's social media accounts that displayed unsafe behavior:

  • Patrons throwing axes at bottles of spirits, consuming shots from the bottle that was not struck, and a message displayed on the video stating: "Who said don't mix alcohol with axe throwing?"
  • A person bouncing an axe off the floor to hit the target.
  • A person flipping the axe in mid-air and catching it with the other hand before throwing the axe at the target.
  • A person throwing two axes at once.
  • Three people identified in the video as coaches throwing axes at one target at the same time.
  • A person dropping and catching axes behind his back before throwing two axes at the same time at a target.
  • A person attempting to balance feet on a strap, walking barefoot (tightrope style), carrying and tossing an axe at the target.
  • A person juggling two axes before tossing them at the target.

The bar served their one-day suspension on Sept 10.

Bar management says they've made some adjustments to the game and would "continue to implement others," according to LARA.

However, if you're still feeling nervous about throwing axes around folks who just had their third Long Island Ice Tea, rest assured there are other games at the bar for you to participate in. For example, you could play a round of "bombowling" - a football/bowling hybrid that has players throwing footballs at bowling pins.
