The Rua Talk Evolution Of Their Sophomore Album: 'It's Just More Upbeat'

The Rua is in a new place in their lives — a happier space — so it goes without saying that their upcoming sophomore LP is reflective of that kind of positivity.

Fresh off a canceled flight and last minute bus ride into New York City, Roseanna, Alanna, and Jonathan Brown recently took to iHeartRadio HQ to talk about their upcoming album, which is set to stand apart from their debut effort, Essence. "Our new album is more pop. We've got a lot of pop," Jonathan revealed, before Alanna chimed in on the production process. "It's more lighthearted. We still did it analog. It's all done analog on tape. It's just more upbeat and fun [with] some groovy basslines and guitar."

While Roseanna admitted that their 2016 effort was "quite dark" in hindsight, they've managed to find a natural progression in their sound and songwriting for this new release. "We've grown up so much as well, and the stars that we listened to, I just think we're happy with it," she added.

Recorded in Rome over the course of two months, the sophomore effort will include lead single, "All I Ever Wanted," which received a pop-up bubble clip over the summer. "We knew we wanted to have a performance video 'cause we hadn't really had a full performance video before. I was like, 'Why don't we just take the title literally [with] like 'All I Ever Wanted,' which excited Jonathan," Roseanna recalled. In the video, which was released in June, the British siblings can be seen performing in a living room and dreaming up some of the things they've always wanted. "I thought anything we buy, we get to keep, so now I have a chocolate fountain and a popcorn machine, and I'm very happy," Jonathan echoed.

Prior to dropping the album, The Rua is planning on spending the remainder of 2018 hitting the road with a batch of new tour dates and they are ready to hear the reaction to their newest offering. "We've got some cool stuff coming up. We just can't wait to get out there and play, well, obviously the single, but we're playing new stuff," Roseanna continued. "It's gonna be a lot of fun seeing people's reactions to the new kind of sound."
