Eddie Vedder pulled out all the stops during the Ohana Festival over the weekend. Not only did he cover The Smiths with Johnny Marr and bring out all sorts of special guests during his headlining set, but he also paid tribute to one of the many greats that we lost too soon.
While closing out Saturday night (September 29) of the SoCal music festival, the Pearl Jam frontman brought Scott Thurston of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers fame out to perform some very special songs — "Wildflowers," "Room at the Top," and "I Won't Back Down" — three days before the first anniversary of the legendary singer-songwriter's death.
Watch some fan footage of the performances below.
Petty passed away on October 2, 2017 at age 66. On January 19, 2018, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner announced that Petty had died accidentally from mixed drug toxicity, a combination of fentanyl, oxycodone, acetylfentanyl and despropionyl fentanyl; temazepam and alprazolam, and citalopram.
The Ohana Festival wasn't the first time Vedder paid tribute to the iconic performer. He covered “Room at the Top” at the Oscars earlier this year and "I Won't Back Down" during a Pearl Jam concert in London over the summer.
On Monday (October 1), Petty's estate released the video for "Gainesville," a previously unreleased song that is featured on a recently released retrospective collection called An American Treasure.
