A Fieldfare feeds on berries

Residents of Gilbert, Minnesota have been noticing that birds have been acting strangely over the past few weeks. The birds are crashing into cars, colliding with windows and "acting confused," causing people to call the police over their odd behavior.

It turns out the birds are acting weird because they are getting drunk on fermented berries. The Gilbert Police Department explained in a Facebook post that early frost has “expedited the fermenting process” and many birds have yet to migrate south for the winter.

“We’ve sort of nicknamed it ‘berry benders’ now that these birds are on a berry bender,” Gilbert Police Chief Ty Techer joked to Fox9. “The young birds’ livers can’t process it as well. They seem to be loopier, for lack of a better term.”

The police told residents that they do not need to call the 911 to report drunk bird sightings and said that the birds should sober up within a few minutes.

Park ranger Sharon Stiteler advised anybody who sees a drunk bird to "try putting it in a box in a dark place where it can kind of sleep things off."
