An elementary school teacher at a charter school in Washington D.C. was sexually assaulted by another woman while working at an afterschool event that she had planned. The brazen assault was captured on camera, but the teacher claims she was further victimized by the school when they placed her on unpaid leave following the incident.
Page Garbee was posing for photos with a mother and her guest when the guest slapped her on the butt.
"All of a sudden, I felt someone smacking my behind. I stood up, bewildered, looked over and I put out my hands. I'm not sure what I said. ‘No. Stop.’ But it was a moment of shock for me," Garbee told WJLA.
The woman did not stop after her slap to Garbee's behind - she then reached up Garbee's skirt before grabbing the shocked teacher's breasts.
"Then, all of a sudden, there was a hand reaching underneath my skirt. As the woman said, I want to finger your [redacted]. Again, I started backing away. I said ‘no.’ And then she made sort of a lunging motion at me and grabbed my breasts."
After weeks of trying to find the woman, police managed to identify and arrest 29-year-old Andrea Shantora Brown, who admitted that she was drunk and on PCP at the time of the incident.
While police tried to track down Brown, Garbee told her school that she wanted to return to work, but needed assurances that school security would be increased to ensure her safety. Instead of helping and supporting their young teacher, the school made the situation worse by placing her on unpaid leave, instead of paid administrative leave, which her doctor suggested.
Garbee said that she lost out on around $3,200 of pay that she believes she is entitled to.
Brown pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and forced to enter into a drug rehabilitation program. Garbee has since left the teaching profession and enrolled in law school.
