Every fall, video game companies release their biggest titles of the year just in time for the holidays. This year, there is no shortage of new games, with some of the most popular video game franchises getting sequels and expansions. From Red Dead Redemption 2 to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, there are games for everybody, and we have a list of the must-have games this year.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Release: October 26; Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 is at the top of every gamer's holiday wish list. The long-awaited prequel features over 60-hours of gameplay that takes players to the Midwest in 1899. In November, Rockstar plans to release an online component to the game as well, so you will find plenty of things to do long after you beat the main campaign.

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey

Release: October 5; Platforms Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC

The latest game in the Assassin's Creed series takes you to ancient Greece at the start of the Peloponnesian War. You play as a Spartan warrior and get to travel throughout the Aegean Sea, meeting historical figures such as Hippocrates and Socrates as you progress on your personal odyssey. The game is one of the highest rated games in the series, with one reviewer from IGN saying Odyssey is one of "the best open-world roleplaying games ever."

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Release: December; 7 Platform: Nintendo Switch

If you don't have a Nintendo Switch, this holiday season might be the perfect time to get one. Nintendo is pulling out all the stops with their latest version of Smash Brothers. They have already released a list of 68 playable characters, which includes old favorites like Mario and Donkey Kong, and new characters such as Bayonetta and Mega Man. That isn't even the full list so you can expect to see even more of your favorite video game characters join the roster.

Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII

Release: October 12; Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC

Activision's fourth installment of Call of Duty: Black Ops is all about multiplayer. The game features the regular assortment of multiplayer modes and zombies, but the big addition is a new Battle Royale game called Blackout. Just like Fortnite, players parachute into a giant map and have to find weapons in an attempt to be the last one standing.

Spider-Man

Release: September 7; Platform PlayStation 4

Everybody was excited when it was announced that Spider-Man would be returning in a brand new open-world game. If you don't have a PlayStation 4, this game will make you consider swinging by your favorite store and picking one up. The latest edition brings Spider-Man to life, letting you swing freely through New York City while fighting crime and taking down some of the web-slinger's most popular villains.

Fallout 76

Release: November 14; Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC

Fallout 76 serves as a prequel to entire series and focuses almost entirely on multiplayer. The game tasks you with rebuilding civilization 25 years after a nuclear war destroyed the planet, which is still a barren wasteland, in which you must scavenge supplies and work with other players to survive. Or you can just kill them and take their stuff. It is entirely up to you.

Pokémon: Let's Go

Release: November 16 Platform: Nintendo Switch

Following the massive success of Pokémon Go, the next installment in the series is heading to the Nintendo Switch in the form of two games: Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! These games are going to kick-off a new series of Pokémon games for years to come.

Madden, FIFA, NBA, NHL 19

Releases: Madden - August 10; FIFA - September 28; NBA - September 7; NHL - September 4; Platforms: Xbox, PlayStation 4

If haven't already picked up the latest version of your favorite EA Sports game, this is the perfect time to grab it. What better way to spend Christmas morning than dunking on your siblings in basketball or hit-sticking them on your way to the end zone in Madden?
