Halsey is a domestic violence survivor in her new music video for "Without Me," which debuted on Monday (October 29).
In the four-minute clip, which was directed by Colin Tilley, the pop star is seen partying with a lover at the bar, but he gets a little too wild with his consumption. Being the good girlfriend that she is, she brings him back home and attempts to care for him. Still, things only get worse later in the video when scenes of the pair fighting fill the screen, but it seems like this dynamic is much more than just a shouting showdown. Towards the end of the clip, we discover that the relationship was an abusive one that Halsey endured until the violent man is seen in a police car as one of the final frames.
"Tell me, how's it feel sittin' up there?/ Feeling so high but too far away to hold me/ You know I'm the one who put you up there/ Name in the sky, does it ever get lonely?/ Thinking you could live without me/ Thinking you could live without me," she sings during the chorus. "Without Me" is the first piece of new music from the star since her 2017 LP, hopeless fountain kingdom, and was written under her real name, Ashley.
"I think that's what I'm kind of getting at is that it's like it's not protected by some character or some subplot," the 24-year-old singer said. "It's like this is really me talking about my life. It kind of gave me like an existential crisis as an artist a little bit, because I've prided myself on being an artist who's authentic and writes about her life and all that stuff. And then when I made this and I felt just how bad it hurt."
