An armed father is being hailed as a hero for stopping what could of have been a mass shooting at a McDonald's in Alabama over the weekend. The unidentified man and his sons were leaving when a masked man stormed into the fast food restaurant and started shooting. The man pulled out his own gun and returned fire, striking the masked assailant. The man and one of his sons were shot, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The shooter, who died of his injuries, was identified as Antonio Demond Sanders. Police do not know if the attack was an attempt to rob the restaurant or if he was targeting a certain individual inside.
One of the employees who was working in the kitchen described the shooting to WBRC.
“All we hear is like different gunfire, so in my mind, I’m imagining everybody is dead. He’s looking for us," said Markus Washington.
Washington said that he quickly ran into the freezer where he hid until the shooting stopped. He told the news station that he was grateful that somebody was there to stop Sanders.
“He’s my hero. Because I can only imagine how it would’ve went if he wasn’t armed. We might not be here having this interview,” Washington said.
Police said that the father is not expected to face charges for his heroic actions.
