It's been seven years since Cake released their seventh album Showroom of Compassion, and now the new music drought is over.

The band recently released "Sinking Ship," its first new, original song since 2011, and it's quite the poignant track. Instrumentalist and backing vocalist Vince DiFiore calls the track “a sobering meditation on the current human habitation of the planet.” Adding, “Where do we go from here? It’s always worth contemplating.”

Frontman John McCrea also detailed the new song in a statement. “We are happy to be releasing new music; this time in the form of a series of singles," he explained. "‘Sinking Ship’ is quite pessimistic but somehow does not seem hyperbolic right now. All proceeds from the sale of this song will be donated to Doctors Without Borders. CAKE is proud to be able to help out in securing real leadership for the United States. It is a critical time for the world, and it is more important than ever to find leaders capable of putting country above self-interest. Real greatness comes from community, cooperation and ethical leadership.”

Though the alt-rockers are focusing on singles, they are working on a new album that's slated to come out early next year.

Along with the song, Cake put out an accompanying claymation video with longtime collaborator Owen Streeter. Check it out below.
