Video Shows Employees Cooking Rat on Grill at Burger Place in Hawaii

Rat seen cooking on grill at Hawaii burger chain

A Hawaii-based burger chain has closed one of their Honolulu restaurants for a deep cleaning after video posted to Snapchat appeared to show a rat being cooked on the grill by employees. 

Teddy's Bigger Burgers says they closed the Mapunapuna location, and fired the two employees who appeared in the social media video once they became aware of the footage. 

“We are horrified that a former teenage employee would conduct themselves in that way and make such a video of which we are investigating its authenticity,” Richard Stula, the president of Teddy’s Bigger Burgers said in a statement. 

The company has initiated a "complete sanitization" of the location and will replace all the equipment and utensils at the fast-food restaurant, Stula said. 

"We will then send a corporate team in to inspect and complete a thorough audit of the location before it is allowed to re-open," Stula said.

The brief clip (embedded below) shows two teenage employees joking while they film the grilled rat. It's not clear when the video was taken.

Stula says they're consulting with attorneys to determine whether they should bring legal action against the former employees seen in the video. "We are horrified a former employee would create something like this trying to destroy our reputation without regard for our 20-plus years of quality and aloha," he said.

The restaurant received a passing grade during its last inspection, in June. Officials from the state’s Department of Health were scheduled to inspect the restaurant Friday.
