Rumors have circulated for years that the church of Scientology has interviewed and auditioned girlfriends for it's most notable member, Tom Cruise. Now Valerie Haney, a former member of Scientology's elite Sea Org for 22 years, has come out detailing the process of finding the actor a girlfriend while being a member.
Haney detailed her "escape" from the church on the premiere of Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath. She spoke with The Underground Bunker, a blog run by Tony Ortega that reports on Scientology.
“Tom Cruise worships David Miscavige like a god," Haney says of Cruise's relationship with the church's leader. “They worshiped each other." Haney claims to be a part of the church's program that auditioned women to be Cruise's girlfriend, saying the auditions "absolutely happened."
There were many rumors speculating that Cruise's ex-wife Katie Holmes "won" the role as his girlfriend back in 2005. This is the first time we are hearing from someone that these auditions did in fact take place.
Cruise's relationship with the church's leader: Miscavige is an interesting thing to look at. Ex-Scientologist, Marc Headley who worked close to Miscavige for 15 years called the relationship between these two as "the most intense, expensive bromance in history."
Haney explains that in 2004 Miscavige hosted a birthday for Cruise where he "denigrated" his wife Shelly in front of all of the church executives. His wife, Shelly Miscavige, has not appeared in public since 2007 and in 2013 Remini filed a missing person report.
Haney explains that Shelly had issues with the "bromance" between Cruise and Miscavige. “Shelly was pissed off all the time," Haney explains. "Dave was raging at everyone day after day...and he had nothing for Shelly. So she was crying every night."
Karen De La Carriere, another well-known and respected member of the church until she left in 2010 says that Cruise was "practically channeling" Miscavige in his infamous interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show in 2010. "The way he lit into Matt Lauer, calling him glib and attacking him -- that was exactly how David Miscavige deals with people," says De La Carriere. "That was the purest example of how Tom is in Miscavige’s valence. It’s a scary thing to watch."
