At least four people have been killed and at least 11 more injured in a shooting near a popular Christmas market in France, police said Tuesday.
The gunman is still at large, police added.
"Incident taking place. Please stay calm and await official communications," officials tweeted.
The shooting reportedly took place near Strasbourg's Christmas market, which is popular with tourists. Security officials have cordoned off the area and trams have been stopped, following the reports of gunfire.
"There were gunshots and people running everywhere," one local businessman told local media station BFM-TV. "It lasted about ten minutes."
Police said the gunman struck in different places around the city center just before 8 p.m. local time.
French police are calling the situation a "serious public security event" and are asking anyone nearby to remain indoors. Security forces are coordinating to lock down the area, where the shooter is still believed to be at large.
We are getting a clearer picture now from officials. Apparently one person dead in shooting in Strasbourg, six injured.
