Ariana Grande Speaks With Estranged Father On Christmas Amid Family 'Drama'

December 26, 2018

Ariana Grande appeared to make amends with her estranged father on Christmas.

The "Sweetener" singer took to her Instagram Stories with a black-and-white snapshot of her dad, Edward Butera, with whom she reconnected over FaceTime from her phone, surrounded by festive candles and her Christmas tree.

Ariana's father, a Florida-based graphic designer, has remained more or less absent in the pop star's life since he separated from her mother, Joan, when she was eight-years-old.

While the songstress has mostly kept mum about her distant relationship with Edward, Ariana gave her Papa a shout-out on Father's Day in 2017 with an adorable throwback pic on Instagram, writing "I love you." Before then, the musician had only spoken about her father at length in a 2014 profile with Seventeen, describing their broken bond as "one of the hardest things" she's dealt with.

"It’s private, but it happened last year," Ari told the pub at the time. "It took me so long to be okay with it."

"The thing that got me there was embracing the fact that that I am made up of half my dad, and a lot of my traits come from him," she confessed. "So much of me comes from my father, and for so long, I didn’t like that about myself. I had to accept that it’s okay not to get along with somebody and still love them."

Years afterward, Ariana would briefly make mention of her dad toward the latter end of her smash single "thank u, next." On the track, she sings: "One day I’ll walk down the aisle/ holding hands with my mama/ I’ll be thanking my dad ’cause she grew from the drama."

There's still no word on whether the family "drama" has been settled, but it looks like Ari's making the best of a difficult situation.
