Sandra Oh Gives Speech On Becoming First Asian Actor To Host Golden Globes

Sandra Oh made history at the 2019 Golden Globe Awards tonight (January 6) as the first-ever Asian American performer to co-host the ceremony — and the actress marked the occasion with a lecture on the importance of representation in the industry.

Shortly before closing out her opening set with fellow co-host Adam Samberg, Oh nearly came to tears while giving a deeply-personal monologue about the groundbreaking moment onstage.

In her speech, Oh fully embraced her position notwithstanding "the fear of being on this stage" because she "wanted to be here to look out at this audience and witness this moment of change." And considering this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Oh made the most of the spotlight.

"Right now, this moment is real," she went on, looking to the crowd. "Because I see you. I see you. All of these faces of change. And now, so will everyone else."

The proud moment was made even more charming as her parents were spotted in the crowd with beaming smiles as they witnessed their daughter's historical accomplishment.

This wasn't the only win she celebrated tonight, either. Oh was overwhelmed with joy when she was awarded the trophy for Best Performance in a Television Drama By An Actress for her lead part on Killing Eve, making history two-fold as the first actress of Asian descent to bring home the honor.

Just hours before, the star's family appeared on the red carpet to wish Oh luck on her big night, wearing custom shirts for the event that read, "It's an honor just to be Asian — Sandra Oh."
