Mackenzie and Jeff Bezos divorcing

After more than 25 years of marriage, Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos, and his wife MacKenzie announced that the world's richest couple is getting a divorce.

"As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends. We feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married to each other," according to a tweet both of them signed.

"If we had known we would separated after 25 years, we would do it all again. We've had such a great life together as a married couple, and we also see wonderful futures ahead, as parents, friends, partners in ventures and projects, and as individuals pursuing ventures and adventures."

"Though the labels might be different, we remain a family, and we remain cherished friends," the Bezos wrote.

Bezos, 54, first met MacKenzie 48, while working together at a hedge fund in the early 90's. They married in 1993, one year before Jeff Bezos founded Amazon.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which ranks the world's wealthiest individuals, ranks Bezos as being worth $137 billion - making him the richest people in the world. Bill Gates comes in second with a fortune of $92.5 billion in assets.

MacKenzie Bezos is an author of multiple novels, including The Testing of Luther Albright and Traps.

Depending on how the divorce settlement is structured, MacKenzie Bezos 48, could soon become the world's richest woman, with $69 billion. Amazon is based in the state of Washington, which is a community property state. That means any property, assets or debt the couple acquired during the marriage will be divided equally by the court if the Bezos cannot come to an agreement.
