Halsey Explains Why She Never Publicly Confirmed Her G-Eazy Breakup

January 29, 2019

Halsey and G-Eazy took a second shot at romance, but tabloid reports, subtle social media digs and her hit single, "Without Me," informed us that the reunion simply didn't work out. In her new cover story with Glamour, the pop star offered some clarity on the whole situation, admitting that she wanted to comment publicly about the split but decided to keep her mouth shut, at least on the PR front.

"The biggest lesson I learned was to make art, not headlines," the 24-year-old singer/songwriter told the magazine. "Because it can become quite easy, in the social media generation, to go from being a musician to becoming a personality."

As she explained in our interview, Halsey decided to let "Without Me" do all the talking and it clearly resonated with her audience when it became her first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. "'Without Me' is about caring for someone so much that you lose sight of yourself, she explained. "I call myself a collector; I collect things from people and use them to widen my artistic repertoire, so that I am writing from a culmination of experiences from the world. But I'm an imitator as well, because I’m so passionately putting myself in other people’s shoes all the time."

While Halsey acknowledged that "women are required to be so f**king original" in today's landscape, she is part of a group of industry females that remain entirely supportive of one another. "I will say one thing about my generation of artists: We are just not f**king having it," she stated. "Lorde, Ariana [Grande]…if you open any of our text messages at any given time, all of us are just like, ‘Yo, I love your new record. When are you leaving for tour?' We’re so supportive."
