When it comes to parenting her five kids, Joanna Gaines try to limit their screen time as much as possible. In order to keep Duke (14), Ella Rose (12), Duke (9), Emmie Kay (8), and Crew (7 months) from spending all their time playing games on the family iPad or watching too much TV, Joanna and her husband, Chip Gaines, implemented strict screen time rules.
“Our rule for the iPad is that the kids can use it a certain amount of time every other day,” Joanna revealed in Southern Living. “It’s contingent on them doing their chores and homework. I try hard to make it not the thing they look forward to every day. I don’t want them focusing on that.”“It’s funny when I say, ‘No iPad games,’ and then see the things they create and invent on their own,” she continued. “I’m like: ‘That! That’s the stuff right there, kids.’" She also revealed they do not have a TV in their family home, so the kids aren't able to waste time binge-watching their favorite shows.
Joanna also acknowledges that even though her life can look picture perfect from the outside, she struggles like any other mom. “I’ve been through plenty of stages of guilt. It always creeps in. It paralyzes me. I don’t want to waste a second of emotion on something that doesn’t create any good,” she said. To combat those moments, though, she says: “I think, ‘What can I do to show my kids I love them?’ Even if it’s making a cup of hot cocoa, which takes a few minutes. It’s about finding little ways to connect.”“Celebrate others doing little things as well as big things, and celebrate yourself by saying, ‘This is what I was meant to do,’ ” she continues. “I really want women to feel encouraged. Know that you are doing enough. Own yourself.”Joanna's first children's book, titled We Are The Gardeners, is co-authored by her children, so, it definitely seems like those strict screen time restrictions are working out for the Gaines family!
