Bangladeshi security personnel stand guard near a Dubai-bound Bangladesh Biman plane on the tarmac of the Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong on February 24, 2019, following an emergency landing after a man apparently attempted to hijack the aircraft.

A hijacking attempt of a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight was foiled after the military killed the suspect following a shootout on the runway at the Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

The plane, which was carrying 143 passengers and seven crew members was forced to make an emergency landing about 40 minutes after taking off from Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka. The 25-year-old suspect told authorities that he had a pistol and a bomb and demanded to speak with his wife and the country’s prime minister.

The military sent a commando squad in and demanded that he surrender. The suspected hijacker opened fire on the commandos and was killed in the resulting shootout.

None of the passengers or crew members were harmed and have been removed from the plane.
