An Indiana homeowner returned to his home this week to find that an intruder had tried to steal his 900-pound safe and had become trapped underneath it, police said.
George Hollingsworth, of Marion, Indiana, told police he was inspecting his home, located about 70 miles north of Indianapolis when he made the grisly discovery. Hollingsworth said he discovered the door to his garage had been busted open. When he went inside the cluttered garage, he discovered that his family's 900-lb antique safe had been lifted by a floor jack, and then knocked over, crushing the would-be burglar.
"Hollingsworth began cleaning the clutter in his garage to see if any items had been stolen. Upon cleaning, he found that his antique floor safe weighing over 900 pounds was knocked over," the Marion Police Department said in a statement. "Upon further inspection Mr. Hollingsworth found a body lying underneath the safe."
The Marion Fire Department was called to help lift the safe and remove the body, Marion police said. The dead man was identified as Jeremiah Disney, 28, of Marion.
An autopsy will be performed by the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center, the department added.
