A fifth-grade student died two days after she got into a fight with another student at Forest Hills Elementary School in Walterboro, South Carolina. Officials say the fight occurred in a classroom and when administrators broke it up they found RaNiya Wright unconscious. She was taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where she passed away.
"She will be missed greatly by her family, friends, and the entire school community," the Colleton County School District wrote on Facebook. "Our entire school district is saddened by this event. It is very difficult to experience the death of a young person."
Police say that the other student involved in the fight has not been arrested but has been suspended from school during the investigation. They did not say what caused the fight nor did they detail the injuries the young girl sustained. An autopsy is scheduled to determine her exact cause of death.
"RaNiya was a wonderful student. She loved to write, spend time with her friends, play basketball and loved being a big sister," the school district said in a statement. "She was actively involved in her church as a junior usher. She will be missed greatly by her family, friends and the entire school community."
