The wife of convicted drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is trying to launch a new clothing line named for her husband, but trademark authorities say it's a criminal name and the brand "violates public order, morality and good manners."
Emma Coronel announced this week on her Instagram account that she was starting a new clothing line, writing, "I invite clothing designers who are starting out and who want to join the project, to work with me."
The design process for Coronel's clothing line has already begun and will reportedly include caps, clothing, and jackets that feature her husband's signature as part of the brand's logo. The first few items are supposed to be available by this summer.
The 61-year-old 'El Chapo' signed over the rights to his name and signature to a new company, El Chapo Guzman: JGL LLC, according to reports. Coronel dubbed the new clothing line, "El Chapo Guzmán: JGL," but so far, trademark authorities won't register the trademark, citing her husband's past criminal behavior.
'El Chapo' was found guilty in February on several charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, drug trafficking, money laundering and firearms possession. Guzmán is awaiting sentencing and could spend the rest of his life in prison. The 11-week trial included testimony from several former cartel members who described Guzmán's brutality and the details to his crimes.
