Shawn Mendes Says Rumors About His Sexuality Are 'Hurtful'

Shawn Mendes has addressed the rumors about his sexuality once again, admitting that it's hurtful to hear so much speculation about the hot topic.

In his new cover story with The Guardian, the 20-year-old chart-topper, who was just announced as an upcoming SNL musical guest, opened up about the fuss. "For me it's hurtful," he told the magazine. "I get mad when people assume things about me because I imagine the people who don’t have the support system I have and how that must affect them."

Mendes went on to elaborate that the speculation can hurt others in the process and that is something that gets him riled up. "That was why I was so angry, and you can see I still get riled up because I don’t think people understand that when you come at me about something that's stupid you hurt so many other people," he continued. "They might not be speaking, but they’re listening."

In his November 2018 Rolling Stone cover story, Mendes opened up about the topic and said that he felt he needed to be seen with girls "to prove to people that [he's] not gay." Additionally, the profile saw the star criticize himself for talking about seeing so many young couples like Dua Lipa and her boyfriend on the blogosphere. "It made me seem so creepy," he told The Guardian. "If anything, the article made me realize your career isn’t over if people think you’re not perfect."
