Chris Evans sat down with Men's Journal ahead of the release of the most anticipated movie of the year: Avengers: Endgame. Though he didn't give away any spoiler's about Captain America's fate in the film, he did open about another point of fascination for his fans: his on-again-off-again relationship with Jenny Slate.
While the two were together, the relationship garnered a lot of attention even though the two are pretty successful about keeping their private lives out of the spotlight. Chris addressed this phenomenon when Men's Journal asked if the public interest in their relationship was because everyone thinks of him as a bro. “I think she may have even, at first. But then she was just like, ‘Man, you’re not like what I thought you were going to be.’ I can speak fluent bro, but I don’t consider myself one," he says. "I wear a hat, and I drink beer, and I like sports. But I was a big theater dork in high school, you know what I mean?”
Though Chris has kept pretty mum on this subject since their (final?) split back in March of 2018, Jenny spoke candidly about both their relationship and their breakup in a profile by Vulture. The pair met while co-starring in the movie Gifted after discovering they had a lot more in common than they originally believed. “We used to talk about what kinds of animals we were,” Jenny said at the time. “Chris said it’s like I’m a chick riding on a St. Bernard’s head. We’re an odd match.”
“I remember him saying to me, ‘You’re going to be one of my closest friends.’ I was just like, ‘Man, I fucking hope this isn’t a lie, because I’m going to be devastated if this guy isn’t my friend.’ ” she continued, recalling the first time they met of set. She then told a story about the first time they went out to dinner when the squabbled over who would pay the bill. “If you take away my preferences, you take away my freedom,” Jenny told him. “Then I was like,Oh, man, is this dude going to be like, ‘Ugh, this bra-burner.’Instead, he was like, ‘Tell me more.’ ”
Another way they bonded on set was through game nights Chris hosted, which Jenny was initially not excited about. Echoing Chris's sentiments about she thought he was a total bro, Jenny said: "when he was like, ‘Game nights,’ I was like, ‘This is annoying. This guy’s like a sports guy. He’s the kid that likes P.E.’ I first really liked Chris as a person because he is so unpretentious. He is a straight-up 35-year-old man who wants to play games. That’s it. I was like, ‘I’d better not discount this, because this is purity.’ ”
Despite their relationship ultimately not working out, Chris tells Men's Journal he still really wants to have a wife and kids at some point. The now 37-year-old actor said: “I really want kids. Yeah, I do. I like pretty pedestrian, domestic things. I want a wife, I want kids. I like ceremony. I want to carve pumpkins and decorate Christmas trees and s**t like that.”
