R. Kelly's having a hard time keeping up with his multiple on-going legal cases. So much so, he recently lost one of them after failing to appear in court.

According to TMZ, the disgraced singer was so "overwhelmed" with his legal woes, he had no idea he was served court papers while in jail earlier this year. Kelly is claiming he signed documents while being locked up for failing to pay child support and had no idea that they were in connection to one of his sexual abuse cases. Or at least that's the story he and his lawyers are sticking to as they are now fighting to undo the legal defeat on that basis.

The case in question is Heather Williams' sexual abuse case against Kelly. Heather, who is one of Kelly's many accusers, sued the 52-year-old singer back in February, claiming he sexually abused her when she was 16-years-old. The lawsuit came just after Kelly was indicted for ten counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

As for how Kelly got served while behind bars, Heather's attorney, Jeffrey Deutschman, said he initially sent a legal letter to Kelly's team to settle the suit out of court. However, he got no response. And when he tried to serve Kelly at his home, security made it impossible.

Kelly's civil attorney, Brian Nix, has sense responded to their legal defeat, saying in a statement, "R. Kelly was served while incarcerated on the child support case and he was overwhelmed by the experience of being in jail. [Being overwhelmed] coupled with Mr. Kelly not being cognizant of what the motion fully meant led to him missing the hearing. I had no idea he had been served."

Kelly's lawyer is now trying to get the default judgment thrown out so they can fight it out in court.
